Importance of Personality-Molding Education of Surrogate Child
by Genetic Mother
The “Surrogate Motherhood” program affords infertile women an opportunity to raise their own children. The duty of taking care of children and their welfare is imposed upon genetic parents immediately after a surrogate child is handed over by a surrogate mother to them, following the nine-month carrying period.
A genetic mother will face the task of building up harmonious “mother-child” relationship with the baby who was carried for her by a surrogate mother. Classification of relationship between the mother and the child was suggested by S. Brodi and can be superimposed on the relationship between a genetic mother and surrogate child.
It is required that genetic mother display supportive, permissive behavior to encourage generation of the feeling of confidence by a surrogate child.
In turn, absolute accommodation to child’s demands might result in a certain tension of communication. In this case, genetic mother would often suffer the lack of sincerity, would dominate the child, rather than yielding to the child’s needs.
As a result of inconsistent conduct of genetic mother the child may generate the feeling of uncertainty and inferiority.
L. Kovar derives the “mother-child” relationship from the general model of family relations. In his opinion, the type of such relationship will depend on a degree of appreciation of a child by the parents, their attitude to the child, the process of his/her self-assertion.
In this case, genetic mother should not run to extremes and devote her whole life to the child in order to resist blankness and senselessness of life. If she does, the child will lack the chance to show independence and will generate irresponsibility and helplessness. Should she do everything for him, the child would depend of his/her mother’s whims, while the mother would depend on her child’s whims. In such an alliance, there would be no need for father who would be no longer necessary. Although a surrogate child is always a welcome child, the mother leaves the child whenever she (and not the child) thinks it necessary.
It is rather important for a genetic mother after completion of the surrogacy program that the sense of duty grow into sincere interest in the child, while her relationship with the baby be filled with warmth and emotional spontaneity.
It is also important for genetic mother to focus all her attention on the educatory process and banish completely the lack of self-confidence. When facing certain taking-care problems she is free to apply to specialized literature or an expert any time. Educatory uncertainty can become more serious problem than the lack of any applied skills that can be mastered easily.
Genetic parents must take proper care of social wellbeing of their child. In those cases where a family is forced to do battle for the social and economic survival in a hostile world, their surrogate child becomes the victim of such a struggle.
The ideal medium for a surrogate child is considered to be the one where all child’s direct manifestations are evaluated as significant and acceptable for an adult, while genetic parents develop autonomy of child’s personality and feeling of immunity.
